Barred

NGC-1300

It’s all but official. We’re living in a barred-spiral galaxy. Hooray! Much more elegant arrangement than a regular spiral galaxy, which can look like a drunk spider that fell down the steps. Above is one of the most photogenic of the barred spirals, NGC 1300.

How appropriate for your blog! Barred spiral galaxies are probably produced by the near collision of two smaller galaxies… as they attempt to pass, they get caught in each other’s pull. The “bar” is formed by the line between the two older centers of…. thought?

The centers come together in “donklephant”.
