Young People “Geeking Out” Online – A Necessary Evil?
A new report from the Digital Youth Project takes a thorough look at the online behavior of some of our youngest internet users. In what will likely comes as a shock to most educational experts, the time children spend online socializing with peers is likely critical to them using the net for such serious matters as education.
Stating that kids need time to “hang out†(socialize), “mess around†(tinker, perhaps to the level of becoming a local technology or media expert), and “geek out†(experience internet-inspired inquisitiveness), the report offers some basic category descriptors to help adults, particularly educators, discuss and quantify what children are doing on the world-wide web.
