Public Policy Polling: Santorum More Electable Than Romney

By  |

So let’s look at the numbers from Public Policy Polling…

Yes, Rick Santorum is ahead of Romney by 2 points. And that’s the first time in PPP’s stats that this has happened. Romney has always been ahead of his competitor when it came to electability against Obama.

So how could this possibly happen?

There are few answers to that question. Let’s walk through them.

First, Romney is clearly a weak candidate. The GOP flavor of the month has surged in the polls to gain some sort of parity with Romney since July, but they ultimately imploded due to some gaffe or scandal. So this back and forth, see saw thing that keeps happening makes Romney seem like the John Kerry of 2012.

Second, Santorum is a great debater and campaigner. And if you’ve seen any of his victory speeches, they’ve put Romney’s to shame. The guy has some serious talents and he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in years to come.

Third, we don’t have a Huckabee. You know, that charming, aww shucks, relatable politician from the South who can connect with evangelicals and excite the base. And especially after 2008, they’re making Romney work for the nomination instead of just handing it to him. Not only that, I believe Christ Matthews said it best when he suggested that they want to feel good when they walk out of that voting booth. And Romney, like Kerry, doesn’t give his base a very good feeling.

Those are my thoughts. What are yours?

    yeah…. no.

Pop quiz: What do all of these people have in common?

Palin. Trump. Bachmann. Cain. Perry. Gingrich.

Answer: They all led Romney in a national poll. Until they didn’t.

I give Santorum until super Tuesday to enjoy his day in the sun.

Agreed. There is a TON of negative research just waiting to be unloosed on the man. The question is who will initiate it. Romney’s negative campaign against Gingrinch hurt Romeny’s numbers as much as Gingrich. I wonder if the Romney camp is reluctant to do that again. But what choice do they have?

Santorum thinks he answers to God before the constitution. That disqualifies him.

I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

He can’t promise to defend the constitution if there’s ever a conflict with his belief that the laws of God are the supreme authority. Thanks for playing Rick.

Super Tuesday can’t come soon enough.

The other column to not ignore is the undecideds: more people have made up their mind about Santorum (as evidenced by the comments above). If you split the difference on the undecideds, Romney is ahead.

Ok, ignore that last comment…I can’t do basic math.
