ASOS in legal battle with German menswear company

Online retailer ASOS is bracing itself for a legal battle after a German fashion company claimed its name was to similar to theirs.

Anson’s, who do not sell online, want the famous clothing brand to operate under a different name in Germany and are ready to go to court in order to enforce the changes.

ASOS are ready to fight the challenges and will send representatives to a court hearing in Hamburg on May 3.

A spokesperson from ASOS told The Daily Mail that the German menswear store was being “opportunistic,” that there was “zero evidence” of any customer confusion between the two brands and that they were very confident of maintaining their brand name throughout Germany.

Anson’s have already obtained an injunction preventing ASOS from using asos.de as the URL for their German customers or using a German language pop-up advert on the British website.

The controversial marketing news comes soon after ASOS announced that its international business has overtaken its UK business for the first time last week.

Recent figures show that their international sales totalled around £48.4 million, which represents about 52 per cent of their turnover.

Marketing Week report that ASOS are also dealing with similar legal claims from Swiss cycling clothes specialist Assos.
