Baur media radio stations launch iPod tagging tech

People listening to Kiss 100 or Magic 105.4 on their iPod will be able to tag songs for later reference by using a new app from owner Bauer Media.

Some models of the iPod have a built in FM radio whilst others require an additional receiver that plugs in to the player’s docking port. Starting this week, listeners of Kiss or Magic will be able to see the title and artist of the songs playing on the radio and store this information for later. When they next dock their iPod into their home computer, this information can be used to find the corresponding tracks on the iTunes store.

This service will only be available for listeners in London as this is the only area where either station can be received via FM. iTunes tagging software for radio broadcasts was first seen in Europe in November when Absolute Radio launched the service. Formerly known as Virgin Radio, although the station is available throughout the UK on the AM/MW frequency range, the tagging technology requires an FM broadcast – which is only available in London.

UK marketing news publication Brand Republic reports that Steve Parkinson, the managing director of London Radio, said that the Bauer Media stations “have evolved their listener offering to reflect the way music is consumed in 2010… [keeping] London listener’s tuned-in wherever they are and whenever they want us”.

Brand Republic reports that a joint initiative from the radio industry, Radio DNS, is in development. This project aims to deliver technology that will allow listeners to tag songs, adverts, news stories or comments that they would like to return to later. Unlike the iPod tagging it would provide more flexibility in terms of platform and capabilities, extending beyond allowing listeners to buy tracks from iTunes.
