Microsoft profits rise dramatically

Marketing news publication Marketing Week has reported today that Microsoft has seen a 60 per cent rise in profits during the final quarter of 2009. Microsoft attributed the success as a result of a heavily focused marketing campaign for Windows 7.

Windows 7 was released in October 2009 and was supported by a massive advertising campaign, utilising the strapline, ‘I’m a PC and Windows 7 was my idea’. The system has been Microsoft’s most popular and fastest selling operating system yet – surely a welcome break after the disappointment of Vista.

In the company’s quarterly reports, Microsoft announced a profit of $6.66bn for the three months leading up to the 31 December 2009. This is a meteoric rise from the same period in 2008, where the company made a net profit of $4.18bn.

Chief operating officer at Microsoft, Kevin Turner, stated about the profit: ”We are thrilled by the consumer reception to Windows 7. This is a record quarter for Windows units”.

Microsoft is not the only technology corporation to report a dramatic increase in profit. Apple, Yahoo and Google also reported strong figures this week, with on Wednesday Apple launching its new tablet device, the iPad - to be launched in March. Microsoft is also set for some stiff competition from Google with the release of a Chrome OS imminent.
