Party leaders ready to market themselves in TV debate
In a move akin to the US presidential elections, leaders from the three main UK parties are set to come to blows in a television debate to be screened tonight.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Conservative leader David Cameron and Liberal Democrat front man Nick Clegg are all hoping to win the public’s vote using charm, wit and the obligatory policies of course.
Rather than policy, UK marketing news commentators are focusing on who has practised in role play situations, who will be applying the make up, what colour ties the candidates will be wearing and who will trump who in terms of quick witted one liners, as the politicians hope to engage the British public.
BBC News reports that the manifestos have given the electorate little inspiration, failing to promote one party ahead of another, thus this debate is seen as being of great importance.
The debate is expected to draw an audience of millions, who will place the leaders under extreme scrutiny in terms of personality and substance. Viewers will be waiting with baited breath to see which politician will make the first gaffe, who looks the most at ease and most importantly, which man can deliver the most successful and humorous attack.
This exercise is seen to be the most vital marketing tool in the election campaign and as such, expect shirts to be pressed and teeth to be whitened. To see the clash of the titans or more fittingly, clash of the red brick educated, silk tie wearing brigade, tune in to the first election debate at 8.30pm on ITV1.
